susan portland newI have always found pleasure in color, line, and texture. Since childhood, I have been happiest when creating three dimensional forms with whatever materials were available; paper, cardboard, clay, fabric, beads, and now metal.

I find inspiration for my jewelry in nature, architecture, sculpture, and in the qualities of the materials themselves. Sometimes I start with a completed design idea in mind; other times I explore a technique or a finish or a shape and then build it into something wearable.

My interest in the studio bounces back and forth between geometric and organic shapes, brilliantly reflective and matte textured finishes, surface decoration and streamlined form. So many choices! My wish is to translate my joy in working with silver, brass, copper, bronze, and stone into comfortable, everyday jewelry with a contemporary spirit.
